Which South Rim tour fits your visit?
The flight and the sunset tours answer different questions. One shows you the canyon's scale from above in well under an hour; the other two put you at the rim for the best light of the day. This table is the short version of the choice.
The South Rim sits inside Grand Canyon National Park, so the park's own fees apply on top of any ground tour that does not include them. Entrance is $35 per vehicle or $20 per person, America the Beautiful passes are valid, and the park is open year-round with no timed-entry reservation system. One change catches visitors from abroad: from January 1, 2026, non-US residents 16 and older pay an additional $100 per person surcharge, or $250 for a pass, and several tour listings exclude it. The airplane tour sidesteps all of this, since the air-only flight never passes an entrance station.
One more thing worth knowing before you plan around the far side: the North Rim has been closed since the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed Grand Canyon Lodge, with a tentative May 2026 reopening. Check nps.gov before counting on it. The park also runs its own list of authorized guided tours if you want to cross-check an operator.
How do you get to the South Rim?
Drive time decides most South Rim plans. Flagstaff is about an hour and a half out, Williams about an hour, Sedona roughly two hours, and Phoenix three and a half to four. Las Vegas is the long haul at four to four and a half hours each way, which is why Vegas-based South Rim days run 17 hours or more. What should you not miss at the Grand Canyon South Rim?
The rim itself, on foot: the paved Rim Trail links the viewpoints around Grand Canyon Village, and Mather Point near the visitor center is the classic first look. Stay for sunset if you possibly can; the two sunset tours above exist because the last hour of light is the best hour at the rim. And if the weather cooperates, the 40-minute airplane flight shows you the confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado, a view no overlook on the rim can give you.
Is the South Rim worth seeing?

Do you need reservations for the South Rim?
